         <title><![CDATA[At Press Time: Texas TRS Makes Three New Appointments]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  The $96 billion Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) has made three new appointments in its investments division, naming a new deputy CIO, senior managing director of private markets and managing director of strategic research and risk management.   Lee Partridge has been promoted to the deputy CIO role with the plan.  He has been with the plan since 2001, serving most recently as managing director of strategic research and risk management. In his new role, Partridge will be responsible for strategic research, risk management, external managers, hedge funds and trading.]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[Financial Woes Hits Asset Managers ]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  This year's collapse in the financial markets, and the more recent flight to liquidity are not just taking a toll on the U.S. economy, which seems headed into a long and deep recession by most accounts. The whole financial industry, battered by declining earnings, is retrenching, with some 130,000 jobs eliminated over the past year according to a November report by the outsourcing firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.  The institutional fund management industry is no exception, with a growing list of firms announcing layoffs of everyone from back-office support staff to research analysts and even portfolio managers.]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[New Mexico ERB Starts GTAA Search]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  As first reported on imweekly.com (11/10/08), the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB) has dotted the i's and crossed the t's on the global tactical asset allocation (GTAA) RFI it has been prepping, confirmed Bob Jacksha, CIO with the $7 billion plan.  The search, which has been in the works for the past month (See IMW, 11/3/08 and 10/29/08), will be for $400 million, Jacksha said. He noted that more than one manager may be hired and that funding for the GTAA allocation would mostly likely come from its fixed-income portfolio, as that is the asset class in which the board is currently overweight.]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[Pa. State Plan to Issue Real Estate RFI ]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  The Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System (PA SERS) will roll out an RFI for a real estate investment advisor later this month, confirmed Pamela Hile, spokeswoman for the fund.  The Townsend Group currently assists PA SERS with its investments in the asset class. The firm's contract will expire on June 30, 2009, which prompted the system to launch the search.]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[FCERA Terminates Artisan, Wraps TIPS Search]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  The Fresno County Employees' Retire-ment Association (FCERA) has terminated small-cap equity manager Artisan Partners, said Roberto Pena, administrator of the $2.7 billion California plan.  Artisan had been in trouble with the plan for quite some time due to poor performance and personnel changes and had been on FCERA's watch list since the beginning of the year. The manager oversaw a roughly $55 million mandate.  The board first discussed terminating the firm at an earlier meeting and decided to give Artisan a chance to present its case for retaining the account at a meeting last month.]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[Texas Trust Could Replace Consultant]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  The $54.8 billion Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Company (TTSTC) is searching for a new investment consultant, according to an RFP issued on its behalf by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.  The selected consultant would assist the TTSTC with its asset allocation, risk management, manager selection and management of its private equity, real estate and real assets portfolios. The firm would be hired to serve a two-year term, with two optional one-year extensions.  ]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[New PE Funds Approved at LA 911]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  The board of the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions (LAFPP) gave the go-ahead for two new investments at its meeting last week, confirmed Tom Lopez, CIO with the $11.7 billion plan.   According to Lopez, the guns and hoses plan made a $10 million commitment to Alta Growth Capital Mexico Fund-a $150 million fund focused on Mexico's middle-market growth equity sector-as recommended by the StepStone Group.          <description><![CDATA[  Small-cap growth manager Batterymarch Financial Management has been terminated on a $215 million domestic equity mandate by the Teachers' Retirement System of Illinois.  According a statement issued by TRS, the firm was removed because of performance issues. The proceeds from the portfolio will be temporarily placed in an optimized index account.]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[New Hampshire Plan Considers Three For Smid-Cap]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  The Manchester Employees' Contributory Retirement System (MECRS) will interview potential smid-cap equity managers at its Jan. 13 board meeting, said Gerard Fleury, executive director of the $150 million plan.  Fleury said that the board decided on Ironbridge Capital Management, Penn Capital Management and Rothschild Asset Management at its meeting last Monday. He noted that the board is not yet certain what the exact size of the mandate will be, but that it will hover around $10 million. It is also undecided on whether or not it will replace the plan's mid-cap allocation with smid-cap. ]]></description>

         <title><![CDATA[Money Manager Starts Alternatives Biz]]></title>
         <description><![CDATA[  Nuveen Investments is taking advantage the surge in interest for alternative strategies among institutional investors and has formed a new unit to serve the market.  The firm announced last Thursday the creation of Nuveen Alternative Investments.  Mark Anson , who is president of Nuveen, and Jamshaud Zovein , who will be managing director, will head the group. Anson is most known for his prior stint as CIO of the California Public Employees' Retirement System. Zovein currently runs the institutional product development and management team at the firm.]]></description>
