September 5, 2008 - Mohamed El-Erian, who recently returned to Newport Beach-based Pimco after running a multi-billion dollar endowment fund at Harvard University for two years, will take over as the sole chief executive of the bond investor. Prior to this appointment, El-Erian shared the top spot as co-CEO with Bill Thompson, who announced his retirement from the firm after 15 years yesterday. August 27, 2008 - The Boeing Company has hired Scott Hamp to serve as director of hedge funds for the company's $50.4 billion pension fund. Hemp, previously senior director of international equities with the $32 billion National Railroad Retirement Investment Trust Fund (NRRITF), has been brought on board as Boeing prepares to double its hedge fund allocation from 3% to 6%, or approximately $3 billion, according to published reports. August 5, 2008 - Ben Phillips has stepped down from his post as partner and director of research at Jeffries Putnam Lovell, to join Casey Quirk & Associates. He will be responsible for managing and expanding the firm's research operations and overseeing its white papers, Casey Quirk said in a published statement. Plans on how Putnam Lovell plans to replace Phillips could not be ascertained, however. Richard Chimberg, spokesman for the firm could not be reached by press time.
July 30, 2008 - Matt Severs has been named head of consultant relations for Northern Trust's North America-based corporate and institutional services business. The position is a newly created one for the firm. Severs will work 'alongside relationship management, sales, product development and operations to support all asset servicing touch points between Northern Trust and the community,' the firm said in a prepared statement.
July 25, 2008 - Brian Torrisi has joined MFC Global Investment Management (MFC) as managing director and head of U.S. consultant relations, the firm announced today. In that position, Torrisi will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all of the firm's investment consultant relationships. Torrisi will report to Frank Saeli, MFC's senior managing director and head of U.S. sales and relationship management.
July 7, 2008 - Andrew Waisburd has joined Invesco as a quantitative research analyst, spokesman Bill Hensel said. Based in Boston, he will be a part of Invesco Quantitative Strategies (IQS), and report to Anthony Shufflebotham, head of U.S. research for the unit. Waisburd will have joint responsibility for quantifying and testing fundamental and behavior investment insights, among other duties. He was most recently a senior quantitative analyst at the Chicago-based Harris Investment Management (HIM).
July 3, 2008 - Dennis Johnson is leaving his role as director of corporate governance at the $235.6 billion California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) after three years in the position. He was responsible for the plan's $7 billion corporate governance investment program and led a 17 person corporate governance team. He is joining Shamrock Holdings' Activist Value Fund as a managing director.
June 24, 2008 - Eileen Okada will retire from her post as director of global equities at the $170 billion California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) on Nov. 1. According to the fund's Web site, Okada had been on leave since March 28. She joined CalSTRS 36 years ago as an accountant. June 17, 2008 - The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation (APFC) is conducting an internal search for a new CIO to replace Richard Shafer, said Laura Achee, spokeswoman for the plan. She said that Shafer has decided to leave the fund. His last day will be July 30. The APFC board desires candidates with experience as either a CIO or senior member of a portfolio management team. Achee said that the board hopes to have the position filled by the fall.
May 28, 2008 - The $1.7 billion City of Austin Employees' Retirement System (COAERS) will soon hire its first-ever CIO at the plan, said Stephen Edmonds, executive director at the plan. Edmonds explained that the board plans to conduct a search for the new position, however the details and timing of the search have yet to be completely finalized.
